Why the RIGHT Pillow Counts |

|
The overwhelming majority of people use one or more pillows when they sleep. That is why we encourage mattress/bedding shoppers to select and purchase a pillow at the store to rest test the mattress, or if they must, bring their favorite pillow with them to use during the rest test. Pillows are specifically designed to provide, support, conformance and comfort to the sleeper’s head, neck and back. Pillows are very much a part of the overall sleep experience providing orthopedic, better sleep and health benefits to the consumer. It is very important that the consumer not buy a new mattress and foundation while keeping old pillows that may have broken down, lost their loft, support, have accumulated dirt and body fluids, actually have dirt, dust mites, and allergens or just not be comfortable any longer.
Today’s pillows come in various sizes for twin and full beds, as well as queen-size and king beds. They are made out of a extensive range of filler materials including feathers, poly-foam, temperature sensitive memory foam, latex rubber, cotton, wool layers synthetic down-like fibers, and true goose down. Some recent new-technology pillows even feature soft innerspring cores, cool gel and combination of memory foam on one side and latex rubber on the other side. Foam pillows are molded or formed using foams of various densities and firmness to achieve different feels and support levels.
The outer material layer on pillows can be covered in breathable, all-natural cotton, a gauze-like covering, a custom-zipper cover layer, new bamboo or soy/bamboo natural cloth, or other encasement textiles. These can vary in softness, texture, color, washability and comfort. Consumers should consider both the filler material and the outer covering in addition to the feel and comfort when buying a pillow.

There are two main types of bed pillows:
Standard Bed Pillows Orthopedic Bed Pillows
Pillows comprised of a combination of the two styles are produced by some companies.
Standard Bed Pillows are typically comprised of a filler made from foam, synthetic fills, feathers, or down. There are currently hypoallergenic varieties of down pillows to allow people sensitive to down to enjoy the comfort of feather or down pillows.
It is recommended that all types of pillow covers be laundered periodically since they are the part that is in contact with a person's body. But even with regular washing, pillows tend to accumulate large amounts of dust and vast numbers of microbes among the fill and it is recommended that they be replaced every few years, especially for those with allergies.
Bed pillows typically come in common three sizes (in inches); Standard (20x26), Queen (20x30), King (20x36). Body pillows are as long as a full adult body, providing support to the head and neck at the top and to the knees and legs lower down. This type of pillow can be especially useful in providing support for those who sleep on their sides and for pregnant women.
Orthopedic Bed Pillows support the neck by providing a deep area for the head to rest and a supportive area to keep the neck in alignment with the spine while sleeping. These can also be known as cervical pillows. |
